NUTRITION IN SOUTH AFRICA

 

PROGRAM CANCELLED FOR 2020

This program offers a unique opportunity to learn about nutrition, food, health and culture of the region through a variety of field experiences and guest lectures.

Some of the program activities include learning how to prepare South African Xhosa cuisine, visiting food production sites, community nutrition clinics, child health and nutrition projects, HIV and diabetic children communities, nursing homes and sports institutes in Cape Town as well as surrounding communities and townships.

Academic Information

The two courses offered are in residence credit, NTR 353 and NTR 355 both taught by Dr. Freeland-Graves.

Faculty

Dr. Jeanne Freeland-Graves, the Bess Heflin Centennial Professor in Nutritional Sciences at UT Austin, will teach the Field Experience in International Nutrition course and serve as the program leader. She is an expert in obesity, trace elements and foods.

Students live in double rooms in furnished apartments through the CIEE Cape Town, South Africa.

Program Cost

The new program fee is an estimated $6295 using the same study abroad provider, CIEE. It includes a $500 nonrefundable deposit.
