*Page being updated for 2026* Engaging Global Health in Costa Rica provides an immersion experience for students to explore socio-cultural issues, healthcare systems, health determinants, and health outcomes in Costa Rica while practicing Spanish language skills. This program is designed for students from disciplines that have an interest in global health and/or Latin America. Costa Rica provides its citizens with universal health care coverage and offers some of the highest quality health care in Latin America. Students will participate in site visits to unique health and community-based organizations, with further opportunities to enjoy Costa Rica's natural beauty, hospitality, and culture.

Academic Information
Students earn 6 hours of credit total. The grade for the UT course is factored into the UT GPA. However, the language course appears on the UT transcript, but is not factored into the UT GPA. Program featured on BDP strands Patients, Practioners & Cultures of Care and Social Inequality, Health, & Policy.
Faculty
Dr. Ana Todd & Dr. Nancy Guillet both serve as faculty in the School of Nursing. They share the teaching load for the NUR 309 / NUR 390D course during the program. A language course is taught by a local faculty coordinated through our affiliate provider in San Joaquin de Flores.

Housing
Students stay in home-stays with local family. Host family provides 3 meals a day during the week and laundry service once a week. Students are required to stay with local family for the duration of the program

Program Cost
*Program Costs may increase for 2026* Program fee includes housing, meals, administrative and instructional costs, cell phone, and on-site orientation; does not include airfare, books, insurance, local transportation, $500 in-state tuition, and personal expenses. Scholarship applications are due by December 1,2025.
