ECOLOGY IN THE NEOTROPICS

Students will be immersed in the rich cultural and historical setting of Merida, while examining the fundamental concepts of ecology and exploring the tropical deciduous forests, coral reefs, wet lands, and mangrove habitats of the Yucatan Peninsula. Students will take BIO 373, an introduction to ecology, the study of relationships between organisms and their environments across many levels of biological organization from individuals to global ecosystems. Students will also take a three-credit course on Mexican Culture and Society at a local university, which can be used to meet the College of Natural Sciences foreign language/culture requirement. The program includes visits to important ecological and cultural sites in the Yucatan such as the Ria Celestun Biosphere Reserve, Uxmal, and an overnight excursion to Tulum to visit the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve.
