- Seville, Spain
This program studies the transatlantic relationships between Spain, Mexico, and the American Southwest across time, through literature, art, architecture, music, religion, politics, and other forms of cultural expression. Major themes of the course include the interplay of history and fiction, in-group/out-group cultural dynamics, cultural pluralism in Spain (among Christians, Muslims, and Jews) and Spanish America (the complex casta system among European, indigenous American, and African subjects), religious syncretism, and identity formation. This program is based in the vibrant, multicultural city of Sevilla. The city itself will be our classroom, as we visit museums and important historical sites with local scholars. The program also travels to Cordoba, Granada, Toledo, and Madrid.
