MAYMESTER: ENGINEERING GLOBAL HEALTH

 

This course provides an overview of contemporary technological advances to improve human health. We will consider four questions throughout the semester: What are the problems in healthcare today? Who pays to solve problems in healthcare? How can we use science and technology to solve healthcare problems? Once developed, how do new healthcare technologies move from the lab to the bedside? We will compare and contrast answers to these questions throughout the developed and developing worlds. We will also consider legal and ethical issues associated with developing new medical technologies. We will use case studies to examine a number of diseases and healthcare technologies. Students will complete a semester project to design a new technology to meet a global health need. This course is preapproved to meet the technical elective requirement for BME, CHE and ME.

The course is preapproved as a technical elective for ChE, BME and ME. Science/Engineering elective for ARE; Math/science/engineering elective for CE, Free Elective for ECE, Career Gateway elective for MechE, Engineering Elective for EVE.

Faculty

Dr. Maynard has considerable expertise in designing therapeutics to treat infectious diseases and vaccines to prevent them - specifically for those prevalent in less developed regions of the world. This class builds on her research and extends it into other areas of global health.

  • Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance
  • Open to all Engineering majors and non-E majors interested in health
  • Bio311C or similar (e.g. AP Bio) is preferred as a pre-req
  • Above pre-req may be waived by professor upon request
  • Good academic standing and good disciplinary standing at all times

Students will stay in private rooms with shared bathroom and shared kitchen and common areas in a dorm.

Program Cost

The posted program fee is TBD, estimated $4900. Includes housing, welcome and farewell meals, meal stipend, program activities, local staff support, local transportation pass. The fee excludes airfare, most meals, and personal expenses.
