MAYMESTER: IN SEARCH OF RUSSIA'S SOUL: SPIRITUAL TRADITIONS, PAST AND PRESENT

This Maymester program offers students unique exposure to Russian culture, history, and politics through the lens of its mystical and spiritual traditions. Through lectures and visits to museums and other places of cultural significance, students will examine how religious and spiritual practices shaped Russian history in the past and how they influence culture and politics in today's Russia. Students will explore the complex history of Orthodox Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism in Russia by visiting important worship sites, including monasteries and pilgrimage destinations, and having discussions with Russian scholars of religion and practitioners of different faiths. These experiences will be supplemented by lectures, assigned readings, and discussions that examine important foundational myths and stereotypes about Russia and its spiritual traditions.
