MAY TERM ABROAD: EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

 

Students engaging in this May Term will be immersed in state-of-the-art architecture, engineering and construction happening in Japan and Asia in general. The 4-week program starts with 2-weeks in Tokyo, followed by 2-weeks in Kyoto. Students will have the unique opportunity to go behind-the-scenes with many top professional firms and conduct related individual research. Specific academic topics include the latest design and construction methodologies used to solve issues of complex structures, building comfort, energy optimization, sustainability, material technology and new construction methods. This course additionally emphasizes international cultural understanding and includes building tours, numerous cultural seminars as well as activities with local Japanese students. Both Japanese modern culture and traditional culture are studied to understand the origins and evolution of how this culture differs from the U.S.

Academic Information

Students earn in-residence credit for ARE 377K or ARC 326R or ARC 380D as part of Spring registration. Open to ARE, CE, and ARC majors. (Other majors will be considered if strong candidates; talk to academic advisor about degree plan applicability.)

APPLICATION CLOSED - 2025 Program Fee: $5700. Includes housing, program activities/site visits, welcome & farewell meals, local transit pass. Excludes airfare, most meals, personal expenses, and phone.
