- Milan, Italy
Milan has been a design center for over a century. In the prewar period, it was renowned for its heavy industry, as well as the design and production of trains and automobiles; in the postwar period it became known across Europe for elegant domestic products; and it is currently revered worldwide as the epicenter of cutting edge furniture, product, and fashion design. The May term course takes full advantage of its location, and through a combination of onsite lectures and visits to design museums and galleries, as well as to design schools and working design offices, it guides students firsthand through the history of Italian design and production. The course examines product, furniture, fashion, and architectural design in context in Milan, and also affords students the opportunity to visit a number of other sites in Northern Italy.
