To perform assignments in a molecular biological laboratory that require working knowledge of scientific methods and experimental testing. Set up and operate research equipment as directed by supervisor.
Purify protein (column chromatography), perform biochemical assays and electrophoresis (agarose, SDS-PAGE, and sequencing). Prepare media and solutions, culture bacteria, and clone, purify and analyze plasmids. Order chemicals and supplies specific to current project. Monitor radiation (complet paperwork for weekly orders, monthly waste pickup and quarterly inventory), and chemical and biological safety. Act as Lab Safety Officer. Write protocols and record data with explicit detail so that methods can be accurately written for publications. Assist with writing materials and methods for experiments and proofreading manuscripts. Perform computer analysis using Microsoft Excel, Kaleidagraph, ImageQuant, EditView, DNA Strider, MacVector, Netscape, and Microsoft Word. Plan meetings with Principal Investigator, post docs, and graduate students to outline goals and solve problems of research projects. Supervise undergraduates. Make presentations at lab meetings (2-3 times per year), attend lab meetings and other mandatory meetings and perform various assigned tasks.
