Additional Information

Purpose

To perform entry-level professional scientific research assignments related to the field of geography, geology, and geographic information system (GIS) technology. Responsible for evaluation, selection and application of standard engineering and/or scientific techniques used in routine research.

Essential Functions

Makes and records observations and measurements. Compiles data, sets up and operates apparatus or equipment, and analyzes samples. Conducts specified phases of research projects. Performs related duties as assigned. Collects and organizes information for various reports, and in particular utilizes GIS System technology. Reviews maps, graphs, or diagrams using geographic information software and related equipment. Reviews geographic data from various sources. Digitizes and maintains spatial databases of relevant information, document procedures, validates data for accuracy and completeness, completes approved metadata forms, and produces maps of the resulting information. Evaluates information and data from outside sources, determines the quality of the data, and converts data to assist users. Imports, creates, re-formats, and processes data to produce spatial distribution maps. Writes programs and develops user interfaces, menus, and macro-level commands to meet user needs. Develops geographic information systems that may link parcel maps or orthophotos with environmental data. The position may also provide some consulting services.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in the field of assignment, to include major course work in one of the following areas: Computer science, computer information systems, geography, geographic information system technology, management information systems, geology, physical science, environmental studies, or a related field. No experience required.
