To assist the archives staff in preparing archival collections for research use, and to periodically serve at the information or reference desk in the public services unit.

Essential Functions

Rehouse and describe archival collections. Perform word processing and use EAD (Encoded Archival Description) to produce finding aids. Enter data into the Univeristy of Texas Libraries' bibliographic databases and into OCLC.Maintain archival administrative files. Perform preservation activities, including photocopying and encapsulating documents. Assist in transferring archival collections to the Center, occasionally traveling within the state driving a UT vehicle. Periodically serve at the information or reference desk in the public services unit as needed, including 1-2 Saturdays per semester.

Required qualifications

High school Diploma or GED and Two years of experience performing library functions. Experience performing data entry. Experience using Microsoft Word. Experience using a Macintosh personal computer. Experience in a University Academic library performing archival functions. Ability to lift numerous 50 lb boxes during a 3-4 hour period of time. Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in the Social Sciences or Humanities. Knowledge of Texas and U.S. History. Knowledge of and experience with archival procedures, including arrangement and description, MARC cataloging, and Encoded Archival Description. Experience with preservation methods for archives. Experience with microcomputer applications including Microsoft Word, FileMaker Pro and Excel. Ability to work as part of a team. Ability to collect, organize and interpret information from various sources and to compose descriptive narratives that are clear, concise and grammatically correct. Demonstrated excellent written communication skills. Professional demeanor.
