General Notes

Normal work schedule is Monday through Friday 11am to 8pm and may include some evenings, weekends, and holidays. Demo MP3 files, to be submitted with additional applicant materials, must contain at least one newscast, one sample of feature writing/reporting and one host interview. Additional Information


To host local live network news program under the supervision of the KUT Program Director and to produce and host newscasts and news material such as interviews and reports under the direction of the KUT News Director.

Essential Functions

Hosts local content, including live newscasts aired during daily programming of All Things Considered and runs control board during local broadcast of All Things Considered. Host and prepares pre-recorded and live interviews segments, and two-ways that air during local broadcast of All Things Considered. Hosts news specials and coverage of special events as needed. Responsible for professional execution of live and pre-produced news stories and radio control operations. Produces news stories and reports that meet KUT News standards and deadlines. Report local news from KUT Austin for KUT, state and national programming as appropriate; participates in newsroom editorial and planning meetings and participates in newsroom editing and visioning sessions set up by KUT News Director. Assists with annual special projects and events such as documentaries, event coverage and planning. Write, produce and track news stories for air that meet time, quality and accuracy standards of KUT News. Report spot news, features and series work as assigned by News Director. Participates in on-air fundraising and makes special public appearances as assigned by Program Director and News Director; is on-call to serve as anchor for special coverage during emergencies and other opportunities.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Other related functions as assigned. May supervise interns and other staff as assigned.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in journalism, communication, humanities, social sciences or a related field. Demonstrated ability to engage a news team by hosting and reporting multiple reports on a tight daily deadline. Demonstrated ability to organize and maintain information flow. Two years of full-time news hosting experience within the past four years. Five years full-time news hosting and reporting experience. Ability to function independently on enterprise projects or within a strong team environment. Demonstrated understanding of public radio programming on-air and online on national and local level. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's or advanced degree in journalism, humanities, social sciences or a related field. Three years full-time increasing journalism experience with hosting and reporting newscasts and other programming. Two years experience within the last three years of public radio hosting and reporting. Demonstrated ability to report live on-air with short notice. Demonstrated experience writing and reporting across multiple journalism platforms. Demonstrated familiarity with KUT News mission and audience including knowledge of Austin City and state politics and social issues. An understanding of KUT News' role in the community. Newscast experience and superior production skills, including ability to mix own stories and ability to report live on-air with short notice. Spanish Speaking Skills.
