The Advisor provides varied advising support to Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) Program participants. VUB is a federally funded program designed to motivate and assist veterans in the development of academic and other requisite skills necessary for acceptance and success in a program of Post Secondary education.

Essential Functions

Responsible for the identification, recruitment, selection, and delivery of services to eligible project participants from the target community. Responsible ensure the participants improve their academic performance as measured by a standardized test taken before and after receiving service from the program. Provide outreach and case management services such as academic, college, career, and financial aid information services to military veterans in the program to aid in their retention in the program until they master the skills and assistance need to enter PSE. Provide direct services such as career exploration, study skills improvement, and social skills building. Conduct age-appropriate workshops and activities involving college, career and FA information, TABE 5A and TABE 6A, ACCUPLACER, PSAT/SAT/THEA/ACT test preparation, scholarship information, technical assistance with college admissions and FA applications, and college field trips. Responsible for the collection, establishment, maintenance, and data entry of all assigned student records and required forms. Assist the Coordinator and Director with submission of documentation to governmental agencies as well as grant proposals.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, sociology, or a related field. 3 years experience working with high school students in an academic advising capacity. Must have reliable transportation and willing to travel to military agencies in the target area, community centers and other locations as needed for program recruitment. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

2 years of appropriate and relevant professional experience working in a TRIO Pre-College federal program or similar program with students and parents who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education. Knowledge of academic, economic, social, and cultural needs of disadvantaged students. Experience in advising students toward entering a post-secondary education program. Knowledge of the college and financial aid application process. Experience assisting students with the college admissions and standardized test requirements. Experience with computer technology and software programs. Strong planning and organizational ability, excellent documentation skills, and attention to detail. Bilingual in English/Spanish. Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the student population from which Military veteran participants are selected. Experience coordinating and conducting educational presentations, workshops, and other individual/group activities for low-income and/or first generation students.
