As a member of the publishing team, edit, write, and manage content production, publishing, and maintenance for the Charles A. Dana Center, a research unit of the College of Natural Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin.

Essential Functions

Work with various staff, managers, and leaders to review, edit, and manage content for publication via media including print and Web. Content could include, but is not limited to, mathematics, science, and English Language Arts curriculum documents, teaching tools, books, conference and professional development materials, marketing communications, and grant proposals and reports. In collaboration with the publishing lead and others, advise on and provide skilled assistance with a variety of tasks to product content, including developing specifications, production plans, and timelines. Develop ideas, research and write and edit content for publication. As needed, determine format, perform layout, and coordinate supporting graphics, photography, and artwork with inhouse staff and contractors. Produce content that is accurate, grammatically correct, written in clear, precise language, and that adheres to copyright and other legal requirements. Perform background research and fact checking for Center publications. Perform other editing and writing tasks as assigned by the publication team lead.

Cross functional and other related functions as assigned.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, technical writing, or a field related to the work to be performed. Two to three years of experience in writing and editing for publication. Demonstrated professional demeanor and ability to communicate effectively with a cross functional variety of staff and contractors. Demonstrated ability to work as a team member, independently, and with overlapping projects. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

More than three years of experience in professional and technical writing and editing for publication. Demonstrated strong writing and editing skills. Experience editing education, mathematics education, or science education content and publications. Experience managing publications production processes. Some understanding of the basics of content design and layout. Some knowledge of how to use styles and templates in Microsoft Word. Demonstrated ability to set and manage priorities in a multitask environment with overlapping projects. Basic knowledge of fair use and rights and permissions. Experience with producing web content. Familiarity with various publications styles, including the Publications Manual of the American Psychological Association. Completion of graduate courses.
