To provide leadership to the student immigration advising team within International Student and Scholar Services.

Essential Functions

Provide collaborative leadership to an advising team of six professional staff members by creating a cohesive vision for the team to serve international students at the university. Manage daily operations and work with team to develop work priorities; determine the administrative calendar and plan for the execution of tasks for smooth workflow. Assess impact of all advising processes and procedures to ensure effective and efficient operations. Serve as Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) for the University F-1 Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for J-1 Exchange Visitor Program. Ensure office is in compliance with USCIS and Department of State immigration rules and regulations as it pertains to advising international students. Ensure adherence and accuracy in record-keeping and SEVIS reporting requirements utilizing ISSS and university technology. Stay current with changing university and immigration regulations and provide guidance to advising team regarding regulatory changes and their effect on office policy and practices. Develop resources and procedural materials for staff as needed. In coordination with the Director, recommend and develop policies and procedures to maintain compliance with applicable university, state, and federal rules and regulations related to students. Oversee pre-arrival/arrival immigration services to prospective/admitted students; coordination of inbound reciprocal exchange student processes; and immigration advising services of all international students enrolled in the university. Serve as a resource to advising team in handling complex immigration advising issues. Advise prospective/enrolled international students on immigration regulations and university procedures. Provide support to students and departments on sensitive matters. Cultivate relationships with academic and administrative units to maintain positive working relationships; coordinate the delivery of services; and support the needs of international students. Prepare and deliver presentations to diverse audiences. Attend campus meetings to represent ISSS and international student interests. Communicate with immigration and other external agencies to advocate for international students. Coordinate programs and workshops for academic and administrative departments to increase their knowledge and skills of working with international students. Oversee social media contributions; electronic information and publications; and communication to international students to manage updates in accordance with changing immigration regulations. Recruit, hire and train new staff members. Conduct annual performance evaluations of all staff on advising team. Foster career growth of advising team by encouraging professional development opportunities. Exhibit the highest level of customer service through a commitment of cultural sensitivity and inclusion. Provide vision and leadership to ISSS staff at large, communicating regular updates and information. Work with Director to implement goals per the vision and mission of ISSS in tandem with the critical priorities of the International Office. Serve as an active member on the ISSS Management and ISSS Strategic Teams. Actively support ISSS and International Office initiatives; serve on internal committees, and participate in work groups to support the mission of the office.

Required qualifications

Bachelors degree in a related field and seven years of experience in international education programs in higher education or masters degree and five years of above experience. Proven experience in working with F-1 and J-1 regulations. Solid experience in supervising a team in a collaborative work environment. Excellent cross-cultural communication skills with experience in public speaking and delivering presentations. Excellent professional demeanor. Excellent organizational skills. Excellent written and attention to detail skills. Excellent interpersonal and team building skills. Ability to be diplomatic and proactive in varied interactions. Ability to offer excellent customer service to a diverse group of internal and external constituents. Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively; work well under pressure; and manage complex concurrent projects. Ability to work independently and as a collaborative team member. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Record of progressively responsible experience working with international student advising services in higher education. Experience living or studying abroad. Demonstrated ability to make quick and effective decisions, and to empathize and respond to the needs of various stakeholders. Ability to assess data from a variety of sources, identify trends and issues, and recommend action. Experience developing or revising policies/procedures to meet organizational goals.
