Additional Information

Purpose

The purpose of the position is to advise students on the courses required to achieve their educational goals. Position would also work closely with other advisors in the College of Liberal Arts to monitor the student progress for approximately 7000 students matriculating through the College.

Essential Functions

Collects, organizes, and analyzes information by creating, monitoring, and updating degree plans and student files to provide educational and career guidance to students by recommending courses and determining appropriate educational solutions for a diverse Liberal Arts student population. Position also assists students in examining school programs and helps them to recognize their academic strengths by serving as a mentor, advocate and liaison between the college and various departments on campus. Advisor identifies barriers that could impede academic success; incorporates developmental and multicultural advising skills. Understands and interprets the various college requirements and academic options to facilitate the student's pursuit in fields of interest. Also works with faculty and other university administrators and stays well-informed on program changes. Will work with the Dean and graduation evaluator on development of online advising. Uses discretion in finding solutions, works independently, and makes judgments on significant matters; maintains accurate records on students' academic progress; may create databases for student records; removes holds on student records; may register students for classes; creates and executes communication plan to students; sends correspondence. Participates in activities designed to increase students' knowledge of advising services; may participate in transfer student orientation program. Participates in professional conferences and individual professional development; may present or assist with presentations at conferences.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; and two to three years related experience and training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Computer knowledge within area of assigned responsibility preferred or the ability to learn. (Banner,Goldmine,Cognos) Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred and occasional travel may be required.
