Hours include split shift work, some weekends and evenings. This position is at McDonald Observatory, located 16 miles away from Fort Davis, Texas and 440 miles away from Austin's main campus location.
To support the outreach efforts of the Observatory by supervising the operations of StarDate Cafe at the Visitors Center while providing a clean, safe environment offering appetizing meals and snacks for both Observatory staff and visitors.
Directs and supervises food purchasing, assists in menu planning, preparation and services. Maintains and controls the food inventory and other supplies, plus manages other related business activities. Inspects work and food service areas for cleanliness and appearance. Hires, trains and supervises part-time cafe employees in the general operation of the cafe, menu preparation, clean-up, and stocking. Helps maintain cleanliness and safe working conditions in the kitchen area. Participates in cleaning kitchen, equipment and dining areas. Performs related duties as required. Schedules and coordinates FNBVC staff and facilities for catering events. Assists the Senior Program Coordinator with special event planning and private group functions. Professional handling of cash drawer and cash reports. Prepares and routes all paperwork in association with the cafe.
Other related functions as assigned.
High school graduation or GED. Demonstration of competence in motivating others, planning work for others, managing conflict, managing and measuring work, and managing diversity. Ability to comply with policies and procedures. Two years of experience in a food service area with one year in a supervisory capacity. Use of special food service equipment. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Bachelor's degree in business, hotel and restaurant management or other related field. The University's Transition to Management Certificate (or equivalent).
