Reporting to the Data Center Mission Critical Engineer, will provide technical coordination, operation and repair of the University Data Center facilities and systems.
Operate, monitor, and respond to abnormal conditions in data center facilities and systems. Areas include: electrical, mechanical, building monitoring and controls and will independently perform detailed analysis, resolve problems and monitor systems or processes to proactively prevent problems from occurring. Track and trend operational characteristics and generate useful reports. Coordinate or perform maintenance upgrades on systems. Will be required to provide and analyze report data for accuracy, provide statistical analysis, and supervise third party activities. Will be responsible to develop and enhance data center documentation and process, including emergency response and physical security management. Will effectively communicate with all levels (peer through management). Safety electrical, mechanical, and building inspections. Will oversee third party hardware installations as well as perform installations in the data center. May be called upon to assist other staff members in isolation of technical faults. Oversight of maintenance contractors and safety of internal as directed. Delivers service by coordinating activities between contractors and internal staff. May give direction to a team of data center operators and technicians. Develop and or implement new processes and procedures. Communicate, train, mentor staff. Provide ongoing technical and leadership expertise in supporting data centers. Capable of representing the department in a professional and knowledgeable manner.
Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.
Other related functions as assigned will entail a wide-range and changing scope of responsibilities. Will be on a rotational on-call system and be required to respond to emergencies.
10 plus years of experience in a facilities maintenance and engineering environment. College or technical degree or any combination of experience. Experience in mechanical / HVAC, electrical, or a combination of the two. Basic mid-level understanding of all data center equipment and architecture. Strong knowledge of project planning and management concepts, methodologies, tools, standards, and procedures. Demonstrated technical and analytical skills. Working knowledge of information systems concepts. Advanced knowledge of MS Office suite of tools: Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and Project is required. An understanding of computer networking concepts, topologies, protocols, cabling required. Strong written and verbal communication skills; proven ability to work with in-house customers to gather and translate monitoring and reporting requirements; strong documentation skills. Ability to communicate effectively with peers and train others in subject matter while maintaining highest levels of safety . Ability to learn quickly and address or escalate issues as they arise during normal working hours or when on call. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
5 years in support of a data center or critical environment (ex. Hospital, Power Plant) At least 2 years at journeyman or technician level, or the equivalent in a critical environment. Excellent understanding of the electrical and mechanical systems used in a data center environment, including Feeders, Transformers, Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, ATS/STS units, PDU/PMM units, Chillers, Air handling units and CRAC units and networks. Preference given to data center, hospital, power plant experience or critical environment service Mechanical must have or obtain a Universal Refrigerant Handler certification within a year of start date. Electrical applicants must show relevant work experience.
