Purpose

Position will join the Advanced Computing Interfaces group at the Texas Advanced Computing Center. Will contribute to building powerful mobile applications to enable scientific discoveries that change the world. Position will extend our expertise building powerful web and iOS applications in the Android space.

Essential Functions

Position will participate in the design and development of mobile device applications, including native Android and iOS apps. Will aid in building tools to enable computational scientists of the world to more easily make the leap to discovery using our high performance computing infrastructure through intelligent interfaces. Position will participate in the development of web applications that will support and complement native mobile applications. Position will interact and collaborate with researchers at UT and nationally to build applications that will improve access to high performance tools. Position required to research technologies and ideas for their applicability to projects. Position must evaluate and utilize good software development practices. Position to perform maintenance and provide support to software deployed in a production environment. Position must be willing to participate in writing publications for journals and presenting work at conferences.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science, information science, mathematics, or a computational science or engineering discipline. Four years of experience in the field of research. Candidate must communicate well in person, over email and instant messenger. Candidate needs demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills and professional demeanor. Candidate must have experience with the following: Android application development, REST web service consumption Web friendly languages including JavaScript, PHP, Java, Python, JSON and XML formats. Candidate must also have experience with relational and nonrelational database technologies including MySQL, PostGres, CouchDB, CouchBase, MongoDB. Candidate needs experience with unit testing, modern source control practices (git, svn), build systems (make, ant, maven, grunt.js) and needs to be comfortable in unix environment. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced courses leading to a Masters or Ph.D. degree in computer science, information science, mathematics, or a computational science or engineering discipline. In addition experience with the following is desired: Web application development, REST Web service development, and Web-friendly languages, tools, and technologies. The ideal candidate will also have experience with iOS application Development, mobile web application development, familiarity with high performance computing, and an interest in science and technology.
