Position is located at Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, 4801 La Crosse Ave, Austin, TX 78739.
Develops, installs and maintains the Luci and Ian Family Garden according to the highest standards of native plant horticulture as practiced by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Supervises staff, volunteers, and interns and provides visitor assistance and ensures a positive visitor experience.
Assists the Director of Horticulture in the daily operations of the gardens, specifically the Luci and Ian Family Garden. Installation and care of plant materials. Raking, weeding, mowing, watering, mulching, pruning, shaping. Bed preparation and construction, and spot repair of decomposed granite paths. Plant accession record keeping. Integrated pest management. Safe and effective use of hand tools and light power equipment. Basic irrigation operations and repairs. Updates plant identification signage. Removes garden debris including human generated litter, fallen branches, and animal scat. Collects and processes seeds. Trains, supervises, and works with gardens staff, regular volunteers, community service volunteers, and interns. Directs staff in work assignments. Participates in the selection process of team members. Assists the public in answering questions relating to the Wildflower Center and strives to ensure positive visitor experiences. Education-related activities include volunteer training, docent training and enrichments, site tours, participating in festivals and special events. Manages all responsibilities including coordinating and effectively communicating with members of the Horticulture staff and all other departments; performs associated administrative duties. Works in the nursery operation, as needed, performing duties such as watering and weeding. Provides technical and editorial support for Native Plants, the Wildflower Center?s magazine.
Other related functions as assigned. Occasional evenings and weekends for mission related activities; periodic scheduled weekends and evenings.
Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.
High School Graduation or GED. Demonstration of the competencies: motivating others, planning work for others, managing conflict, managing and measuring work, complying with policies and procedures. Seven years of experience in grounds care and maintenance, including some supervisory experience. Skill in the operation of cultivators, edgers, power mowers and other equipment used in grounds maintenance. Two years supervisory experience. Have substantial knowledge of horticultural techniques, plant materials, and pathologies. Attention to safety essential. Have solid computer skills including Outlook, MS Word and Excel. Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Associates degree in horticulture or related field preferred. Work well with diverse groups of people, particularly children, be well organized, detail oriented, able to set priorities, take direction well from supervisor, and have excellent communication skills. Extensive knowledge of locally native plant materials or ecological systems. Current Pest Control Applicator's License. First Aid certification.
