Additional Information


To provide journeyman or mid-level skills for the fabrication, installation, operation, and routine or emergency maintenance and or repair of University fiber-optics, copper cable for data and telecommunications facilities.

Essential Functions

Installation of communications cabling according to industry standards Perform maintenance on outside plant facilities and equipment. Lead and assist contract labor in the placement of underground and inside plant cabling. Assist in the construction and fabrication of telecommunications closets. Oversees operational safety while placing cable. Responsible for completing job related paper work, electronic time sheets and mileage reports.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Other related functions as assigned.

Required qualifications

High School graduation or GED. Five years of experience in the installation and or repair of outside plant facilities. Experience with outside plant cable installation tools, and confined space equipment. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of related technical courses. More than the required years of experience. Knowledge of copper and fiber termination practices. Knowledge of cable pressure systems repair. Knowledge of the NEC (national electric code). Experience in leading underground cable installations ranging from 100 feet to excess of 10,000 feet.
