The Jackson School consists of the Dept. of Geological Sciences, Bureau of Economic Geology, Institute for Geophysics, and other affiliated, centers, and research museums. Assoc. Dean for Research is a 50 percent position. Additional 50 percent appointment will be as faculty, research faculty, or research scientist depending on qualifications and interests of applicant.

Purpose

Increase the research profile for the Jackson School of Geosciences, promoting and facilitating overall research excellence, multi- and interdisciplinary research, and collaboration across the School while representing the School and its wide range of research activities.

Essential Functions

Foster an active research culture and promote the formulation and implementation of major collaborative research initiatives and multi- and interdisciplinary research. Represent the School as the Associate Dean for Research. Facilitate and coordinate the organizational and institutional support for major research initiatives and proposals. Work with the JSG Executive Committee, theme and discipline leaders, and affiliated centers, institutes, and research museums to develop research strategies and policies for the School. Assist Directors of the organized research units in identifying research directions and opportunities of interest to programs within their units. Meet with the directors of the affiliated centers and institutes and keep the Executive Committee apprised of their activities. Work with theme and discipline leaders to organize topical meetings and/or workshops, both internally and externally, to explore common research interests and potential collaborative initiatives. Attend theme and discipline leaders meetings and theme and discipline meetings. Engage government agencies and labs, foundations, and the wider community to establish networks that may contribute to faculty and research scientist opportunities and outcomes. Serve as a point of contact for conflict of interest management. Oversee the research museums and serve on the associated faculty advisory committee. Oversee the Limited Submission process for the school. Oversee responsible research conduct and safety. Ensure that all research activities are undertaken in accordance with relevant government legislation, university agreements, awards and policies. Serve on the Jackson School Executive Committee (comprised of the Dean, the Associate Dean for Research, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Department Chair, the Directors of the Bureau of Economic Geology and the Institute for Geophysics) and chair the Awards Committee.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Undertake other activities as determined through consultation with the Dean and Executive Committee. Other related functions as assigned.

Required qualifications

Ph.D. degree in geoscience and at least ten years of relevant academic research experience. Exceptional research reputation and publication record with demonstrated ability in obtaining significant levels of research funding. Experience in influencing change within a diverse academic organization. Demonstrated capacity to promote and contribute to the School's strategic research direction. Familiarity with a wide range of geoscience research directions and demonstrated ability to learn new fields. Comprehensive knowledge of funding opportunities in the geosciences, including federal, foundation, and industry support. Ability to build relationships and contacts internally and externally. Demonstrated ethical behavior, professionalism, leadership, interpersonal skills, and management abilities. Record of accomplishments commiserate with appointment to tenured faculty position, research faculty position, or senior research scientist. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
