To provide creative and strategic approaches to the development, implementation, and stewardship of the Mexican American/Latino Studies Library Program of the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection.

Essential Functions

Collection development: Builds and manages the library's collections in the areas of Mexican American and Latina/o studies and U.S.-Mexico border studies in all formats in support of teaching, learning, and scholarship on campus. Serves as an active member of the Benson collection development team. Actively seeks out distinctive and unique collection materials, particularly those focusing on the political, educational, and cultural experience of Mexican Americans in Texas. Works directly with donors, faculty, and staff on development, appraisal, and acquisition of collections. Works with UTL, Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) Benson librarian colleagues, and other development staff on grant project proposals and fundraising activities participates as member of UTL Global Studies team. Liaison and outreach work: Serves as the primary liaison between the Benson Collection and faculty and students of the university's Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies (MALS) and the Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS). Maintains communication with local, state, and national Latino communities and organizations. Develops and promotes collection use through the creative application of technologies. Provides outreach and scholarly presentations to the public, professional organizations and conferences, and student groups throughout the central and south Texas regions. Public service: Provides specialized reference and instruction to faculty, students and other researchers in person via consultation and main reference desk, and via email and telephone. Periodically leads instruction sessions and tours in support of teaching and learning at the university, and for special visitors and guests of the Benson Collection, LLILAS, and the UTL. Professional representation: Actively participates in professional organizations. Participates in LLILAS Benson and UTL committee and project team efforts, such as global studies.

Required qualifications

Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited graduate program, or a graduate degree in a related discipline. Experience working in a library in one or more of the following areas: reference, instruction, outreach, and/or collection development. Demonstrated expertise in Mexican American and/or Latina/o Studies. Fluency in Spanish. Experience with a range of academic electronic resources. Ability to establish and meet project goals and multitask. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to communicate diplomatically and with diverse populations. Ability to work in a collaborative and professional manner with faculty, staff, students, researchers, donors, and public. Ability to work independently and as a team member. Flexible and willing to take on new responsibilities. Demonstrated willingness to respond to new opportunities with initiative, creative energy, and leadership. Available to travel.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in an area of Mexican American or Latina/o Studies. Three or more years of experience in an academic library. Latin American coursework or experience in Latin America. Experience building and maintaining collections, independently or via a team-based approach. Experience using new and emerging technologies for reference and instruction in an academic library setting. Knowledge of scholarly communication issues and trends within relevant academic disciplines. Experience collaborating with faculty in teaching or outreach. Experience working with international populations. Experience providing reference and research consultation in an academic or research library setting. Active involvement in professional or scholarly associations. Demonstrated success in grant writing or other fundraising initiatives. Demonstrated potential for leadership in library, university, state, and national programs and initiatives.
