Develop leading capabilities of electron microbeam instrumentation to allow researchers in the Jackson School of Geosciences, The University of Texas at Austin, and the south-central region of the United States to conduct a broad range of high-impact, discovery class science.

Essential Functions

Maintain all existing electron microbeam instrumentation at full functionality with optimal performance, including daily maintenance and the ability to troubleshoot. Train and assist new and continuing users. Develop and improve analytical protocols. Lead regular workshops, short courses and credit programs to advance knowledge. Plan for improvements of the lab and lab-based and independent research, and prepare grant proposals. Manage the operating account for the lab. Conduct independent research, including writing proposals.

Marginal/Incidental functions

This position will receive 75-percent of salary support annually; the candidate selected for hire is expected to raise the remaining 25-percent of his or her annual salary through externally funded projects. Other related functions as assigned.

Required qualifications

PhD in chemistry, materials science, geosciences or related areas. Strong background in electron microbeam methods. Established record of being reliable, quick-learning, highly-organized, self-motivated, detail-oriented. Demonstrated superior oral and written communications skills. Possess excellent interpersonal skills. Proven ability to work independently and in a team environment. Demonstrated commitment to delivering excellence in a timely manner and working well under pressure. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with geological applications of electron microscopy, XRD, and/or EBSD.
