Purpose

Play a key role in planning and implementing a multi-Petawatt ultrashort pulse laser facility at UT Austin. Provide support in the development of a high average power, high peak power mid-IR laser system. Individual will support the science effort and experimental activities of the Extreme Fields and Plasma Group.

Essential Functions

Support the design, construction and activation of the new multi-beam addition to the Texas Laser Facilities, especially a ultrashort pulse, multi-PW beamline. Participate in further developing the science case for the new facility, including quantum effects in strong fields, laboratory astrophysics, laser-particle physics and high energy density physics. Support program development and proposal writing and publish the results at conferences and in peer reviewed journals. Support and direct the ongoing development of a kHz, 100 TW, mid-IR laser system, both in terms of technical work and student project supervision as well as program development and proposal writing and publish the results at conferences and in peer reviewed journals. Design and implement experiments on the Texas Petawatt and other lasers as well as off-site facilities (LANL Trident laser, Omega at LLE Rochester and LCLS at Stanford) and publish the results at conferences and in peer reviewed journals. Support the group leader, Professor Hegelich, in student mentoring and teaching, program development, and general operation of the group.

Required qualifications

Ph.D. in physics. Two years of post-doctorate work experience in high intensity, short pulse lasers and experiments using those lasers.

Preferred Qualifications

More than two years experience working with high intensity short pulse lasers. Experience in laser, optic, optomechanical design. Proficient with EPOCH, PSC and MCNP software to run simulations in field of High Energy Density Physics or Relativistic Laser Matter Interaction. Undergraduate and graduate student teaching and mentoring experience. Experience writing grant proposals and publishing papers.
