Communications Coordinator enhances the quality, frequency, and utility of communications about sustainability initiatives across the university and the Office of Sustainability to generate awareness and share successful stories and outcomes; and to consolidate the necessary functions for planning, executing events.

Essential Functions

Strategic Communications: Develop and coordinate implementation of OS strategic communications plan including a social media plan. Increase visibility of the OS and other sustainability engaged units to campus and non-campus audiences. Coordinate sustainability communications with other campus and community entities to maximize exposure. Represent OS at relevant conferences, meetings, workshops as appropriate. Materials Production: Research and prepare communication materials to increase awareness of and promote the research, educational, and operational missions of the OS and other sustainability engaged units (e.g., web copy, news releases, event promotion, newsletters, reports, promotional materials for internal and external audiences). Maintain university sustainability website. Design and layout long-form publications such as annual reports and plans. Event Planning: Plan and administer annual flagship events such as symposia, lectures/speaker panels, Earth Month features, recognition events, and educational events. Propose and plan events that promote ideas and actions toward sustainable outcomes at UT-Austin. Collaborate with other units to plan, execute, and promote joint events. Document and evaluate each event for successes and areas of improvement. Student Management and Support: Supervise student interns on social media and other ongoing communications efforts. Lead student interns on graphic design projects including developing graphics and print material for events and OS programs. Support student-led project/program teams in developing effective communications plans and graphics.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Required qualifications

BA or BS degree. 3+ years of experience with communications on behalf of an organization or institution, including extensive writing and social media; 2+ years demonstrated experience with large event coordination. Strong speaking and persuasive writing skills. Advanced capability with basic office software and social media applications; proven familiarity with Adobe graphic design and layout software (or equivalent). Detail oriented and comfortable with learning and following organizational policy and procedure. Able to change gears swiftly while working on multiple tasks, and respond to inquiries promptly. Enjoy networking and collaborating with a wide range of individuals and groups including undergraduate students. Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

BA, BS or Masters degree in Communications or related field. 3+ years of experience with large event coordination, including strategic outreach to improve event quality and attendance. Extended experience with social media campaigns and outreach related to the environment and/or social justice issues; proven track record with innovation and creative communications. Familiarity with a higher education environment, and experience training and/or supervising students. Advanced capability with graphic design software (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) a plus.
