General Notes

Work hours for this position can be negotiated with supervisor as long as they occur between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Occasional hours during evenings and weekends with compensatory time to be arranged with supervisor.

Additional Information

Purpose

Digitizing rare and fragile library and archival material in the Briscoe Centers collection for researchers.

Essential Functions

Using a flatbed or overhead scanner, a mounted digital SLR camera, or video and audio capture equipment, digitize rare and fragile library and archival material. Retrieve and refile materials to be digitized. Create metadata for all digitized materials. Upload digital objects to computer server. Retrieve digital objects from computer server. Greet, register, and orient patrons to the archives. Answer questions in person and by phone about the Briscoe Centers hours and location. Occasionally drive UT Cargo van to drop off and pick up items from vendors for outsourced digitization.

Other related functions as assigned.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Required qualifications

High school graduation or GED, and two years of library experience; or sixty hours of college credit and one year of library experience; or twelve hours of graduate coursework in Library and Information Science. Experience using suite of Microsoft Office computer applications including Word and Excel on Mac OS. Experience with direct in-person customer service with the general public. Must exhibit professional demeanor and appearance. Licenses: Class C Operators Drivers License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Drivers License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. Driving Record must meet UT requirement to drive UT vehicle and must pass UT Driver training program. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience scanning photographs and transparent media and capturing video, audio and 16 mm film. Experience using Adobe PhotoShop editing software. Familiarity with studio photography and various audio and video formats. Knowledge of and experience with archival procedures and preservation. Experience in a university academic library and knowledge of library classification schemes. Experience with database applications, especially FilemakerPro. Experience with the essential functions listed. High comfort level with technology. Comfortable learning new skills. Strong communication skills. Ability to change work priorities at a moments notice. Ability to perform tedious tasks with careful attention to detail; to analyze and solve problems; and to work independently and as a team member meeting deadlines. Strong interpersonal skills, service orientation. Ability to meet challenging situations with flexibility and tact.
