Oversee PMCS Design Services to include the management of a team of architects and engineers, performing professional services for projects, oversight of the alignment to design and construction standards and guidelines, and overseeing the program coordination functions.

Essential Functions

Direct management of the Design Services team to include directing staff of professionals, supporting production of engineering and architectural technical document sets or providing program coordination, scheduling work loads, program development, and coordination of process and document management for the program. Produce complete architectural/engineering construction documents for the area of expertise to ensure high quality, innovation, functional design and the adherence to codes and standards. Provide technical guidance to Design Services staff regarding complex design issues. Meet with internal and external stakeholders to find resolution to unusual problems or design challenges, including best practices and code alternatives for safety in UT Austin building structures. Make professional judgments regarding performance based alternatives, requested modifications, and use of new technologies and materials. Provide assistance and technical advice as needed. Prepare and present reports to leadership regarding accomplishments and activities of the office. Benchmark performance and seek methods of improvement to the design services and service delivery. Monitor and analyze performance measures. Seek input and suggestions from client. Supervise professional staff to ensure clients are receiving accurate and timely technical document sets and technical assistance. Organize and maintain Design Services processes and documentation. Coordinate with in-house technical and engineering staff and vendors to ensure best design. Maintain licensure, including continuing education requirements.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or Engineering. Minimum five years experience as a designer or project manager to include experience preparing and editing technical document sets in the area of expertise. Demonstrated ability to build partnerships with University leadership and colleagues, state officials, and construction professionals. Skilled at providing effective leadership and supervision to a team of professionals. Demonstrated ability to make difficult and timely decisions based on sound engineering judgment, experience, research, and constructability. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with a highly diverse audience. Professional Engineer or Architectural license or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Strong knowledge and skills in AutoCAD and Revit applications. Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Access. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree or advanced degree in Architecture or Engineering. Five or more years experience as a designer or project manager to include experience drafting or editing technical document sets in the area of expertise. Demonstrated experience in the management of comprehensive programs and multiple personnel with the ability to develop and maintain strategic focus. On-site experience at major construction sites with familiarity of building systems including foundations, structures, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems. Demonstrated experience with the evaluation of complex designs to make professional judgments as to the acceptability of alternative technical practices. Knowledge of specialized standards related to construction in the area of expertise. Experience in higher education design including, but not limited to, laboratories, classrooms, student spaces, housing, food service, athletics and recreation spaces. Experience with BIM, Bluebeam, Sketchup and other 3D sketch software. LEED accreditation.
