Assist the Horticulture Department in the daily operations and maintenance of the living collections, grounds, and growing operation through horticultural practices and volunteer management. Provide visitor assistance and ensure a positive visitor experience.

Essential Functions

Maintain the living collections and grounds. Tasks include-Installation and care of plant materials-Raking, weeding, mowing, watering, mulching, pruning, shaping-Bed preparation and construction, and spot repair of decomposed granite paths-Plant accession record keeping-Integrated Pest Management-Safe and effective use of hand tools and light power equipment-Basic irrigation operation-Updating of plant identification signage as needed-Removal of garden debris-Collect and process seeds. Train, supervise, and work with regular volunteers, community service volunteers, and interns. Oversee all horticulture work being performed in the Central Gardens East and provide guidance to the gardener in this area. Use WFC golf carts to transport plant material and equipment to garden locations. Effectively coordinate and communicate with members of the Horticulture staff and all other departments. Assist the public in answering questions relating to the Wildflower Center and horticulture and strive to ensure positive visitor experiences. Participate in education and mission related activities such as volunteer training, docent training and enrichments, site tours, festivals and special events. Work independently and unsupervised on scheduled weekends and holidays. Perform associated administrative duties.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Required qualifications

Minimum four years professional horticultural experience, or Associates or Bachelor's degree in horticulture or related field and three years professional horticultural experience. Substantial knowledge of horticultural techniques, plant materials and pathologies. One year of experience in a supervisory capacity. Basic computer skills - MS Word, Excel, email. Must work well with and supervise diverse groups of people, be well organized, detail oriented, able to set priorities, take direction well from supervisor, and have excellent communication skills. Possession of a current, valid Texas driver's license. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Extensive knowledge of Texas native plants and ecological systems. Attention to safety essential. First Aid certification. Current Pest Control Applicator's License. Skill and willingness to make public presentations and media interviews.
