To perform and report scientific results of molecular biology and pharmacological experiments in a research lab studying the neurobiology of alcohol and addiction.

Essential Functions

Perform DNA, RNA, and protein purification and analysis. Purchase and arrange the validation of study medications for a large NIH funded Consortium. Perform tissue (primarily brain) dissection from mice, with and without perfusion. PCR, qRT-PCR, biochemical assays. Assists with immunohistology. Oversee genotyping by ensuring quality control of provided data and the design of animal assays. Assist with maintaining documentation for animal colonies. Maintain and troubleshoot equipment; write protocols. Design PCR-based genotyping assays. Responsible for purchasing all laboratory supplies through UTMarket, Purchase Orders, or the laboratory Procard. Prepares and maintains purchasing records.

Required qualifications

Master's degree in a scientific field with no experience; or a Bachelor's degree in a scientific field, plus two years of related lab experience as stated in the functions of this position, including experience working independently. Familiarity with scientific equipment. Strong written and verbal communication skills and excellent attention to detail. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Four years of laboratory experience in the field of research. Experience performing technical procedures and methods of a molecular biological laboratory. Competent, independent researcher with strong interpersonal communication skills. Working knowledge of general lab safety procedures. Working knowledge of UT policies and procedures. Prior experience using UT Financial Systems such as FRMS, PointPlus, and UT Market. FileMaker Pro experience a plus but not required.
