Purpose

Provides leadership and management support to the development of the Lyndon Baines Johnson School of Public Affairs and its individual giving programs including annual fund, major gifts, and leadership gifts. Additionally, will provide oversight and direction to alumni relations and foundation relations activity.

Essential Functions

In consultation with the dean, develops and executes the overarching strategy for the School's individual giving program with a particular focus on annual and major gifts. Provides guidance to, and manages the development specialist with the goal of achieving individual and School goals while concurrently addressing professional growth needs and opportunities for the staff. Provides strategic direction to the annual giving program, and overall strategy and management support to the implementation of a comprehensive annual gifts program. Develops a protocol for effective communication, identification of funding needs, utilization of faculty/staff in prospect management, proposal development and other related development activities. Assists the Dean and other leadership in all aspects of campaign activity including, but not limited to: planning, named gift opportunities, prospect management, and volunteer management. Serve as primary liaison to the LBJ Advisory Board, a group of approximately 20 leaders. Specific responsibilities include planning of semi-annual meetings and management of task committees. Work with the Dean of Research and his/her staff to build and maintain strategic engagements with foundations. Serve as the LBJ School's lead in foundation relationships, identification of potential collaborations/opportunities available with foundations, facilitation of LBJ community (Dean, Associate Dean for Research, LBJ School Centers and individual faculty) to develop fundraising strategies for the foundation sector that translate into successful foundation proposals, and identify and secure meetings with foundation leadership. With the Associate Dean for Research and his staff write, edit, and submit letters of intent for funding. Supervises employees in the areas of annual giving, major giving, alumni relations and administration within the LBJ School's office of development. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints, and resolving problems.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree and ten years progressively responsible experience in fundraising and management positions. Experience in a multi-year comprehensive campaign is required; experience in best practices for both annual and individual major gifts programs in higher education or similar institution. Thorough knowledge of current techniques in fund raising for nonprofit organizations, particularly higher education; considerable knowledge of public relations methods, techniques, and practices; knowledge of marketing research techniques; ability to develop, analyze and evaluate detailed fund raising programs; a record of successful fund raising with results shown in corporate gifts, foundation gifts, gifts from individuals, and planned gifts including pooled income funds, unitrusts, etc.; experience in participating in institutional strategic planning and in leading the strategic planning process in the advancement area of the institute. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree. Experience in a college or professional school in a higher education setting or similar experience in a non-profit organization, business or sales environment.
