Purpose

To provide for highly skilled fabrication, assembly and repair of power plant equipment parts, instruments, and machine components, by the use of lathes, milling machines and related machines and tools.

Essential Functions

Assists power plant and chilling station maintenance groups with the repair of plant equipment and utility systems. Assists in performing inspections of major mechanical and electrical equipment components and fabricates, repairs, and machines those components as required. Accuracy in all phases of work performed. Lays out and plans complicated fabrication processes and implements designs. Guides metals or plastics into place and secures stock. Wears respiratory protection as required by task. May be required to work around hazardous materials with appropriate controls. Operates lathes, shapers and milling machines to shape material. Measures parts to assure conformity to standards. Maintains records of equipment repair. Works in conjunction with trades or utility personnel in support of systems within power plant, chilling stations, utility tunnels or other underground utilities. Demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Assembles parts and tests instruments of machines. Attaches electrical and electronic equipment and repairs it. May use hand tools such as files or chisels. Wears personal protective equipment as required by and appropriate for task. Informs appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies as related to equipment and corrects as necessary. Completes work orders as required using automated systems. May assist student, researcher, or supervisor in planning, overall design, development and use. May forge, braze, or weld. Cleans and maintains all equipment and work areas. Identifies, reports, and corrects safety hazards. Updates procedures as necessary. Drives UT vehicle. Maintain acceptable driving record required by UT Systems Policy UTS157. Follows all University and Utilities safety policies. Adheres to the rules of the Utilities Employee Policy Manual. Operates cranes, forklifts, and personnel lifts. Inspect, erect, utilize, and break down scaffolding as necessary in support of plant maintenance and operational duties. Performs elevated work and work in confined spaces. Required to carry UT-provided cell phone during work hours and on-call hours. Attends job-related training and complete training modules.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Perform other related functions as assigned. Attends staff meetings. Attends safety training and meetings. Complete plant operation and maintenance training courses. Training certification required within 18 months. May report to the PRC Campus.

Required qualifications

High School graduation or GED, supplemented by or including vocational machine shop and other technical courses such as mathematics, physics, and blueprint reading. Three or more years of experience in as a machinist or instrument maker, beyond the apprentice level. Lathe, milling machines, shaper, planer, drill press, welding equipment, micrometers, and other precision measuring devices. Demonstrable experience with CNC milling and lathing processes. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

More than three years of related skilled level experience in the repair and maintenance of industrial plant mechanical, electrical or industrial equipment or utility distribution systems. Experience maintaining power plant or similar industrial/utility equipment. Welding certification and boiler component repair in accordance with ASME, state, and industry codes. Experience as a machinist including fabricating, modifying, and repairing pump, turbine, and boiler parts. Experience in a university plant or utility environment. Experience in using a work order system. Demonstrated ability to work well within a team environment. Demonstrated effective teamwork and interpersonal communication skills.
