Purpose

To perform journey-level skilled work in an electrical generation, mechanical and electrical utility, and chilling station environment.

Essential Functions

Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on power plant, distribution systems, and chilling station equipment. Install, modify, align, replace, or remove plant equipment. Installation and repair includes welding in accordance with ASME and AWS codes. Accuracy required in all phases of work performed. Works in conjunction with other trades or utility personnel in support of plant and distribution systems. Internal inspection, overhaul, and repair of steam boilers, package boilers, water heaters, gas turbines, steam turbines, and plant auxiliary equipment. Maintain inventory of equipment, tools, materials, and spare parts. Must be able to read, interpret, and update equipment and system drawings, manuals, and blueprints. Must adhere to all applicable ASME, NBIC, and industry codes and standards. May be required to be certified and perform ASME Code welding in accordance with established welding procedures. Maintain accurate reports of maintenance work completed. Must be proficient in use of a personal computer, including Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, etc. Drive UT vehicle and maintain acceptable driving record required by UT Systems Policy UTS157. Read and adhere to specific written and verbal maintenance manuals, instructions, procedures, and applicable codes. Review and update manuals, check sheets, and procedures with best practice information. Follow all University and Utilities safety policies. Adhere to the rules of Utilities Employee Policy Manual. Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Attends job-related training and completes training modules within 18 months. Identifies and informs appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies as related to equipment or personnel. Corrects deficiencies as required. May be required to perform safety audits and inspections. May be required to train other personnel in safety and job-related categories. Operates cranes, forklifts, and personnel lifts. Inspect, erect, utilize, and break down scaffolding as necessary in support of plant maintenance and operational duties. Perform elevated work and work in confined spaces. Required to carry UT-provided cell phone during work and on-call hours. May be required to report to the PRC Campus for assignments. Cleans and maintains all equipment and work areas. Perform related duties as assigned. Remove, fabricate, and install insulation systems in accordance with established specifications. May be required to obtain and maintain a Supervisors Abatement license for working with and removing Asbestos containing materials in accordance with all laws and regulations. Wear respiratory protection as required by task. Perform related duties as assigned.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Perform other related functions as assigned. Attends staff meetings. Attends safety training and meetings. Complete plant operation and maintenance training courses. Training certification required within 18 months. May report to the PRC Campus.

Required qualifications

High school graduation or GED. Five years of experience in journey level repair and maintenance of electrical, industrial, mechanical or utility distribution equipment. Experience maintaining boilers. Experience maintaining gas or steam turbines. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

More than five years of journey level experience listed above. Demonstrated ability to train subordinate maintenance personnel. Journey level experience in industrial insulation, including fabrication of insulating blankets, thermal insulation, and asbestos handling and abatement. Experience maintaining power plant or similar industrial/utility equipment. Welding certification in accordance with ASME and industry codes. Experience welding boilers, piping, and pressure vessels in accordance with applicable ASME codes. Experience as a machinist including fabricating, modifying, and repairing pump, turbine, and boiler parts. Demonstrated ability to work well within a team environment.
