Purpose

Develop, record, and edit video and multimedia stories for University Communications digital channels. Work with communications professionals across campus to identify stories best told through the medium of video, animation or audio with an emphasis on motivating our audiences to share and engage our posts.

Essential Functions

Create and use video effectively, leveraging visual storytelling to attract a general audience and/or media coverage. Work with the managing editor to develop new and creative ways to translate academic material into multimedia stories online. Identify high-impact projects that encourage audience engagement and leverage social media. Create, direct and produce video projects from conception to upload. Shoot and edit 4-8 video pieces per month. Upon approval of videos, load them into the content management system and make them available for social media distribution. Work with social media colleagues to grow engagement on social media channels. Collaborate with the media relations colleagues to create video and multimedia elements to boost impact of research press releases. Collaborate and participate in planning meetings with media relations and digital newsroom colleagues, as well as university marketing, development, event and creative services teams for occasional special video projects. Stay on top of new developments in online media and share best practices with the newsroom and university communication professionals. Remain technically proficient in all new media software and equipment. Ensure that all video source materials are archived properly.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Communications or related field. Three years of experience with various forms of media, including video and still photography, video and audio editing, graphic arts and animation, scriptwriting and interactive media. Must have a comprehensive understanding of the technical and creative aspects of the pre-production, production and post-production processes. Demonstrated experience interviewing people and skill in structuring story lines that are engaging and lively. Expert knowledge and skill as a DV, HD and DSLR video camera operator, with experience shooting with multiple cameras and formats. Ability to meet editorial deadlines and juggle multiple deadlines at once. Demonstrated skill in visualizing and shooting concepts effectively. Advanced experience using editing tools such as Premiere, Photoshop and similar software programs. Intermediate experience using Word and Excel. Experience with professional live streaming equipment. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree. Five years or more of experience as a photojournalist, multimedia journalist or multimedia producer for online media projects. Three years of experience of editorial decision making within a journalistic or content marketing organization. Experience producing short form documentaries. Demonstrated experience with multiple production formats, including vertical, square and 360 video as well as possess an ability to learn and adapt to new trends, technologies and publishing specs. Fluency in motion graphics and basic animation. Knowledge of digital media concepts.
