Purpose

Serve as the lead writer for the Cockrell School of Engineering producing a variety of compelling content and disseminating news to members of local, state, national and international media. Through effective and proactive media pitching, increase visibility of the school, elevate its brand and celebrate its successes.

Essential Functions

Conceptualize, research, and write a wide variety of high-quality content showcasing the research discoveries, academic achievements and societal impact of the Cockrell School of Engineering. Contribute story ideas, interview subjects and written content for all forms and channels of school communications (website, e-newsletter, Texas Engineer magazine, videos, event materials, etc.). Research, write, edit and distribute news releases and tailored media pitches, and respond to reporter requests in a timely manner. Build strategic relationships with select local, state, national and international media. Serve as the lead writer and content provider on the annual Texas Engineer magazine and provide content and editing assistance on the school's monthly e-newsletter. Meet regularly with Cockrell School faculty and engineering research scientists to uncover impactful breakthroughs and newsworthy stories. Coordinate outreach efforts with communications colleagues across the Cockrell School and the university.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree with major coursework in public relations, journalism, communications, marketing or related field. Five years experience writing and editing sophisticated content for news dissemination, website content and/or other purposes. Proven ability to write clear, concise, accurate and compelling stories about technological, engineering and/or scientific concepts, as well as entrepreneurship and the conversion of technology to commercialization. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other communications tools. Experience working with print, TV and digital news reporters. Knowledge of AP Style. Ability to make sound editorial judgments based on knowledge of readers' preferences, trending topics and good writing principles. Sound understanding of journalistic, marketing and public relations principles. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in journalism, communications or related field. More than five years experience as senior-level writer, editor and/or reporter covering science and/or business issues for a news company or in corporate communications capacity. Preparation and maintenance of media lists and experience using media relations distribution tools such as Cision, Meltwater and/or EurekAlert. Ability to use full-range of story-telling methodsw (written text, photography and videos). Ability to manage other types of communication, such as audio and video storytelling. Successful experience as a professional interviewer, able to craft questions and conduct conversations in such a way as to elicit compelling responses and building trust with interview subject.
