General Notes

Candidates must provide a portfolio of three to six press releases, story pitches, articles, etc. Sample files should be no larger than 1MB. May include speculative or actual press releases, articles, story pitches, essays, etc. Please include at least one sample that demonstrates familiarity with either the art or museum world.

Additional Information


This position will work directly with the Director of Marketing and Communications to promote the Blanton to local, national and international media and build awareness of the museum's many offerings among a variety of audiences.

Essential Functions

Research and write press releases, email campaigns, newsletters, marketing collateral, etc. Organize and maintain press imagery for permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, including accurate caption information. Compile imagery and information for press requests. Assist in securing local, regional, national and international media coverage of all museum initiatives. Manage press lists. Monitor and report on press coverage. Write content for blog and social media platforms. Develop and nurture partnerships with tourism and hospitality industry. Help manage transactions and relationships with marketing vendors including publications, printers, media reps and PR consultants. Help develop cross-promotional initiatives with key arts and business organizations. On occasion, serve as museum spokesperson for media interview and appearances. On occasion, represent the museum at internal, campus wide and community functions.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, English or liberal arts. Must have at least three years experience in Public Relations and Marketing or a related field. Excellent speaking and interpersonal skills. Professional and proactive personality. Knowledge of local, national and international arts and cultural press. Experience researching and writing press releases and story pitches. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, WordPress and Twitter. Excellent writer and grammarian and extremely detail oriented. Good working knowledge of art and the art world and experience writing and speaking about both. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Background in Art History, Museum Studies or similar arts discipline. Non profit experience particularly with an arts organization. Knowledge of local and national arts and audience trends. Experience creating email campaigns. MailChimp experience is a plus. Experience developing and scheduling social media campaigns and posts. Sprout Social experience is a plus. Familiarity with Austin arts and culture scene. University of Texas at Austin arts and culture knowledge is a plus.
