Purpose

To represent the College of Fine Arts in public affairs matters to build public awareness, understanding of and support for the college through strategic communications, in both print and digital forms, on local, state and national levels under the direction of the Public Affairs Director.

Essential Functions

Promotes and executes public affairs activities, including news announcements and publicity. Acts as researcher, editor and writer for news briefs, press releases, feature stories and social media content, under direction of the Public Affairs Director. Serves as editor for college's biannual print magazine and manages project from concept to mailing. Manages college's editorial calendar and supports digital content strategy. Manages monthly alumni email newsletter. Drafts media pitches and messaging with the Public Affairs Director to reach out to media partners to obtain coverage for college news, faculty projects, programs, events or developments. Purchases social media ads and sets content strategy on social media platforms. Tracks and reports on web content and social media metrics. Assists with special events, including booking photographers or videographers. Assists with day-of media relations. Ability to develop relationships internally and externally and work cross-functionally.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Will attend occasional special events at indoor and outdoor venues outside of regular working hours to assist with media relations. Will need to provide own transportation to off-site locations as needed.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, English, Journalism, Marketing or related field. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Two years of experience in a communications role, such as media relations, journalism, coordination of special events, digital content or social media strategist, that requires preparation of informational materials for public release. Candidate must have superior writing, editing and verbal communication skills, interpersonal relationship skills, a robust knowledge of AP writing style and strong time management and project management skills. Very detail-oriented yet efficient, highly organized and able to quickly learn new processes. Strong interest in content strategy and willingness to stay informed about latest trends in constantly changing digital landscape. Professional appearance and demeanor as well as punctuality is expected. Proficiency with a computer and with social media platforms, Word, Excel, web browsers and the Internet. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

More than one year of experience working in communications in higher education. The ideal candidate will have news and feature story writing experience and has had work published online and/or in print. Strong preference for candidates well-versed in digital content strategy and social media platforms and with experience using social media to promote news, events, research or developments. Experience pitching media, coordinating media announcements and news events and working with broadcast, print and social media. Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse team environment and ability to independently initiate and lead projects under continual deadlines and to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Detail-oriented and excellent follow-through skills. Experience working with MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Photoshop, WordPress and Drupal. Familiarity with the UT writing and style guide. Experience handling logistics for special events. Important qualities are an interest in analytics and critical thinking to implement editorial strategies. Coursework or background relating to the arts is a plus.
