Develop and implement communications and content creation efforts to support and promote university-wide research initiatives as a member of the Executive Vice President and Provost's communications team.

Essential Functions

Work as a key member of the communications team to identify and develop high-impact stories to support (1) interdisciplinary research initiatives, including the university-wide Bridging Barriers initiative; and (2) the critical role of research in higher education. Coordinate efforts with team members. Understand complex research stories and convey their relevance to general audiences and to internal and external stakeholders. Subject matter will come from all colleges and schools on campus. Write stories and manage research-related website content for the Provost's Office and its major research-focused constituents. Conceptualize, develop and maintain digital content to promote university-wide interdisciplinary research initiatives. Create and manage social media content, and collaborate to produce video content in order to build awareness and bring focus to the big picture regarding interdisciplinary research across colleges, schools and units. Collaborate with communications colleagues in media relations to pitch stories. Collaborate with social media colleagues to identify opportunities to leverage important interdisciplinary research milestones and tell stories best suited for social media. Build and maintain strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in interdisciplinary research in higher education and identify opportunities for thought leaders to contribute through content and op-eds.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree and five years of experience writing about research. Advanced experience in science writing, technical writing, or other non-fiction writing. Experience interviewing and successfully representing the work of world-class researchers in higher education. Experience in media relations and pitching stories to external audiences. Experience managing website content and working in content management systems. Experience and familiarity with social media, specifically Twitter. Must be a self-starter with demonstrated ability to take initiative and ownership of projects. Team player that enjoys collaborating. Must be naturally curious, and leverage this to quickly understand complex issues and distill them into intriguing and understandable narratives. Basic understanding of and experience with producing video content and comfort with planning and producing for video. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree and more than five years in media relations and science writing. More than five years of experience in communications, journalism, science or related field. Advanced experience producing video and social media content.
