Purpose

Contribute to research and development tasks with the Environmental Sciences Laboratory.

Essential Functions

Process and/or analyze acoustic data, array data, propagation data. Develop processing algorithms and assess their performance. Interpret results. Implement research grade software and analysis tools in Matlab including underwater propagation models, signal processing algorithms, array processing techniques, acoustic analysis tools. Preparation and review of analysis presentations and reports. Presentation of analysis results at internal and external working group meetings (includes travel). Support collaborative research efforts with other team members. Supervision of junior personnel including student employees. Develop analysis plans. Assist in proposing and pursuing new work.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics or related discipline and three years of experience in applied research. Interest in acoustic data processing and analysis, and sonar system design and evaluation. Experience developing software tools and signal processing algorithms using Matlab. US Citizen: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position. Evidence of skills in the following areas: working with new technologies, being highly organized, planning and coordinating multiple tasks, effective time management, attention to detail, effective problem solving skills, using excellent judgment, working independently with sensitive and confidential information, maintaining a professional demeanor, working as a team member without daily supervision, effectively communicating with diverse groups of clients, working under pressure, accepting supervision and demonstrating regular/punctual attendance.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in Acoustics, Physics or related discipline. Current or recent eligibility for access to classified information. Two years of experience analyzing acoustic, seismic or radar data. Background/experience in acoustic propagation modeling, geoacoustic inversion techniques, or sonar system analysis. Two years of experience with software design, programming, and analysis using Matlab. Experience working in both Windows and Linux environments. Experience summarizing analysis results in technical report and powerpoint and presenting research results. Proven ability to work independently, formulate research plans, take initiative, and mentor other staff. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills. Cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Working conditions
