Purpose

Provide skilled design and analysis of appropriate telecommunication cabling systems to meet the needs of the university that are inclusive of cost evaluation, implementation plans, and project management.

Essential Functions

Develop campus telecommunications cabling and construction standards that result in cost effective and performance-based cabling systems. Serve as the university's subject matter expert for telecommunication cabling systems. Provide design, specification preparation, and pricing data for estimates and eventual procurement and installation of UT telecommunications cabling systems. Consult with appropriate University personnel to obtain a statement of need, requirements, and constraints with sufficient detail to produce a quantitative problem definition. Review design drawings and specifications submitted by outside design professionals and provide comments. Point of contact and liaison to UT Austin construction management teams for ITS portions of construction and renovation projects. Stay up-to-date on telecommunications industry best practices, standards, and codes. Evaluate new products and systems to meet University needs with the objective of improving performance and service or reducing costs. Instruct team members and UT installation technicians in the proper use of systems and networks, their limitations, and the integration of their functions with related systems and networks. Inspect projects as needed to ensure compliance to UT standards and codes. Support the mission, policies and procedures of the university and ITS. Participate as a team member in Facilities Design and make recommendations regarding the overall improvement of ITS facilities and project delivery.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Required qualifications

High school graduation or GED, supplemented by technical training in the fields of networking, telecommunications, or engineering. Six years of experience in communication systems design, evaluation, and implementation. Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification through BICSI. Expert knowledge of inside and outside cable plant (copper and fiber) telecommunication cable systems. Expert knowledge of TIA standards, NEC and NESC. Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to implement processes required to complete work on time and at a high level. PC experience in a Windows environment. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels of employees, management and contractors. Ability to work constructively and successfully as a team member with overlapping projects in dynamic, multi-tasked environment. Professional demeanor, wear appropriate attire, and exercise good safety habits. Work under stress of deadlines, independently, and with sensitive and confidential information. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience. 10+ years of experience on communication systems design and evaluation. Advanced knowledge of IT infrastructure design and field implementation. Strong project management experience in construction or telecommunications systems. Experience with CATV/broadband video systems. Experience with wireless communications infrastructure (cellular/distributed antenna systems and WiFi). Experience with integrated building security systems such as access control, intrusion detection and CCTV. Vast industry contacts with other cable system designers and cable/equipment manufactures. Direct involvement with the development of telecommunication standards/codes such as NEC, TIA, or BICSI. Experience with AutoCAD, GIS, Visio, and project management software. Experience working in a large university environment.
