Purpose

Provide system and security administration support for the Environmental Sciences Laboratory (ESL) at the Applied Research Laboratories: The University of Texas at Austin (ARL:UT) with a focus on sponsored tactical projects and security hardened systems deployed locally and at remote facilities.

Essential Functions

Plan, build, harden, deploy, maintain, document, and support Red Hat Linux operating systems (RHEL 5,6,7) on servers, workstations, and virtual machines using both manual and automated system configuration management tools (e.g. Puppet). Plan, prepare, deploy, maintain, document, and support security administrative tasks including areas such as DON (Department of the Navy) Application and Database Management System (DADMS), Authority-to-Operate (ATO), Risk Management Framework (RMF), Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), routine vulnerability assessments using the Assured Compliance Assessment Solution (ACAS), remediation of vulnerabilities, data encryption, and emerging cyber security threats. Design, architect, document, and plan holistic computing (servers, workstations, clusters), network (fiber, Ethernet), and storage solutions (SAN, NAS, RAID) that support scientific research and engineering with a focus on automated/semi-automated tactical data collection, processing, and analytical visualization within a security hardened environment. Provide sponsor facility on-site system deployment support and/or ESL reach-back deployment support. Provide frequent ESL and sponsor telephone troubleshooting support during business hours and occasionally during non-business hours or weekends. Plan, build, harden, deploy, maintain, document, and support Windows operating systems (Win7, Win10) on servers, workstations, and virtual machines using system configuration management tools (e.g. Puppet). Occasional support of Mac OSX operating systems on workstations. Administrative tasks including oversight of physical system inventories, custodianship of classified holdings, classified mail handling, and system and security related documentation. Occasional contributions and support of software engineering team processes and discussions.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Other duties as assigned including occasional domestic travel, and after hours support.

Required qualifications

High school diploma/GED. Must hold a DoD 8570.01 approved certification to satisfy an IAT Level I position or must be willing to obtain certification(s) within 120 days from hire date. Working knowledge of RedHat Linux and Windows in a heterogeneous environment. Knowledge of system configuration management technologies. Knowledge of networking concepts. Knowledge of SAN (storage area network) technologies. Knowledge of system security controls. Ability to assess security posture by identifying and mitigating new and existing vulnerabilities. U.S. Citizen. Applicant selected will be subject to government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, security administration, or related field. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Two or more years of system, network, and security administration experience. Knowledge of security risk management frameworks (RMF) and/or DISA IA controls. Technical certifications with emphasis on security from CompTIA, Red Hat, Microsoft and Cisco. Knowledge of Linux shell commands and scripting languages such as Perl, Python, and Visual Basic. Experience using configuration management technologies such as Puppet, Satellite, and Cobbler. Experience with vulnerability scanners such as OpenSCAP and Nessus. Knowledge of data encryption. Experience in high-performance clustering. Experience in deploying and supporting DoD secured networks. Knowledge of Lustre file systems. Eligibility for immediate access to classified information.
