Purpose

To perform journey level skilled work in the installation, maintenance and service of HVAC systems and chiller plant and perform as a member of a team in a fast paced multi-project environment at the UT Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas, Texas.

Essential Functions

Service and repair of split system A/C systems with sepcial emphasis on heat pump systems. Overhaul and service of HVAC equipment to include: adjust valves, piping connections, remove and install motors, thermostats, and humidistats. Calibration to multiple heat-pumps and timers for temperature control of seawater in lab tanks. Balancing of the air-handlers (dampers) to maintain comfort levels in offices and lab areas. Replacement of air-handler filters and belts. Daily tests of chemical feeders and blow-down pumps on cooling towers. Repair seawater pumps and associated motors. Maintain records and prepare reports on repairs and service to HVAC equipment. Yearly cleaning of evaporated coils and cooling towers. Assist electrician to maintain and repair electrical system. Maintain lighting systems and assist coworkers in other related work projects. Drive UT vehicle to pick up supplies and equipment to job sites. Assist coworkers as needed and perform as a member of a team in a fast paced environment.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Required qualifications

High school graduation or GED. Five years of experience in maintenance and repair in a crafts trade or facilities maintenance. Three years of experience as a journeyman in a construction/facility maintenance trade related to the posted job functions. Licenses - Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. It not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. Must have (or acquire within 60 days of hire test for and receive), a minimum of a Type II EPA certification for handling, purchasing, or recovering refrigerants. Must possess journeyman or master license in HVAC repair. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

More than five years of journey-level experience in a combination of the above required listed trades. More than three years of journey level experience in the following trades: plumbing, painting, and electrical. Electrical background in a commercial maintenance setting desirable. Advanced controls knowledge a plus. Strong background in pneumatic controls and direct replacement with digital controls. Strong background in boiler systems and autoclaves. Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment.
