Purpose

Support the Research and Development tasks of the Environmental Sciences Laboratory.

Essential Functions

Conduct Research and Development efforts to design and evaluate sonar systems. Conduct desktop studies to identify factors affecting acoustic propagation in selected ocean regions using archival and academically available data, including geophysical characterization of sediment type and bottom loss, acoustic propagation, ambient noise and climatology. Develop survey plans for ocean surveys to support the design of underwater systems. Surveys may include ship based sensors such as Multi-Beam Bathymetry and Sub-Bottom Profiles, AUV surveys, and deployable sensors such as Current Meters, Cores, Ambient Noise measurement systems. Provide at-sea support for shipboard data collection efforts. Process and analyze ocean survey data. Implement research grade software and analysis tools for processing and analysis of survey data, acoustic propagation modeling and acoustic analysis tools. Preparation and review of analysis presentations and reports. Presentation of analysis results at internal and external working group meetings. Support collaborative research efforts with other team members. Supervision of junior personnel, including student employees.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Geo-Physics, Acoustics, Marine Geology or related discipline and three years of experience in applied research. Interest in acoustic modeling, data processing and analysis. Experience developing software tools using Matlab. US Citizen: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position. Evidence of skills in the following areas: working with new technologies, being highly organized, planning and coordinating multiple tasks, effective time management, attention to detail, effective problem solving skills, using excellent judgment, working independently with sensitive and confidential information, maintaining a professional demeanor, working as a team member without daily supervision, effectively communicating with diverse groups of clients, working under pressure, accepting supervision and demonstrating regular/punctual attendance.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in Geo-Physics or Acoustics. Recent or immediate eligibility for access to classified information. Experience with acoustic propagation modeling, geophysical characterization, and geoacoustic inversion techniques. Experience analyzing acoustic or seismic data. Background in marine geology, oceanographic survey planning, and oceanographic or geophysical data analysis. Two years of experience with software design, programming, and analysis using Matlab. Experience summarizing analysis results in technical report and PowerPoint and presenting research results. Proven ability to work independently, formulate research plans, and take initiative. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills. Cumulative GPA of 3.0.
