General Notes

Implements operating system enhancements to improve system reliability and performance. May lead projects and direct/evaluate staff. To administer IT system services related to timely and effective sponsored research at the Center for Space Research.

Essential Functions

Oversee the installation, configuration, maintenance and integrity of servers, clusters, desktop/laptop computers, networks (including WiFi), switching, telecommunication/VoIP, and peripheral IT system components such as printers, copiers, scanners, and audio/visual assets. Monitor, coordinate and conduct timely software installation and upgrades to operating systems and layered software packages. Maintain systems in accordance with established UT IT policies and procedures (including those pertaining to Internet security, export control, and proprietary elements of regulatory and /or commercial agreements). Recommend enhancements to the systems. Monitor systems to achieve optimum performance levels. Ensure server data integrity by evaluating, implementing, and managing system backups, data redundancy measures, and relevant elements of the Center's Disaster Recovery Plan. Ensure delivery and support of media management through internal methods and procedures or through offsite storage and retrieval services. Direct hardware and software audits of servers to ensure compliance with established policies and configuration guidelines. Manage inventory of all computer/electronic systems. Recommend IT purchase configurations and obtain quotes when asked.

Required qualifications

Knowledgeable and experienced with managing virtualized server environments in more than one of the following virtualization technologies - VMWare, Citrix XenServer, Oracle VM and Hyper-V. License, Certification and Registration: At least one of the following required, and additional preferred: LPIC, CCRA, and/or RHCSA. Systems administration training and experience. Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in systems administration. Typically relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the function of the job. Ability to learn university systems.

Preferred Qualifications

BA or BS in Computer Science or equivalent. Three (3) years or more experience in state government/university IT systems. Experience in Unix administration (Linux, HPUX, Solaris); shell scripting (bash, tcsh); PERL; Python; web development; set up and configuration of webservers (Apache) and ftp servers; Ethernet switches and networking; securing computer systems and networks (local and network firewalls); set up and configuration of desktop/laptop computer systems (Windows, OSX); set up and configuration of Windows servers; use of automated backup systems; and use of open source software and databases (Gnu packages, MySQL); Linux clusters (SLURM, Infiniband, iSCSI, OpenLDAP, OpenHPC); and programming skills (C, C++, FORTRAN).

Working conditions

Usual office environment. Work performed on concurrent multiple projects under pressure of rigid deadlines and/or time limitations. May require occasional extended work hours or on-call obligation. Ability to lift/carry 50 pounds.
