General Notes

CSR research spans satellite geodesy; remote sensing; modeling and data analysis; and characterization of natural hazards with real-time observation, mitigation and decision support. Seek to integrate across physical science and applications using data analytics and models for characterization and response at all spatio-temporal scales. May be filled as Research Scientist based on qualifications.

Additional Information


Research in use of space-based methods for Earth system sciences and natural hazards response. Leverage existing skills, software and datasets to develop and execute new agenda that ranges from fundamental Earth systems science research to societal impact and operational disaster response methodologies.

Essential Functions

Conceptual formulation of research methodology and outcomes; Mathematical, physical, and algorithmic development; Coding, testing, and automation of scientific software; Communicate results of research in journal articles and presentations. Collaborative and independent research. Supervision and training of junior staff. Write proposals for research funding.

Required qualifications

PhD in Engineering, Geophysics, Physics, or allied disciplines. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge, past experience and awareness of the following: Modern space geodetic and remote sensing methods as applied to Earth system science. Space missions and space geodesy for Earth gravity field and mass flux measurement. Use of remote-sensing methods and data assimilating numerical models for regional and global characterization. Natural hazards, and the design of response and mitigation systems. Knowledge of system use of engineering approaches for solution of large-scale engineering problems.
