To perform molecular biology and biochemical techniques to aid in design and testing of highly selective heterologous mammalian neuron silencers and activators.

Essential Functions

Execute experiments in DNA synthesis including purifying generating oligonucleotides, assembling oligonucleotides into genes and pathways, and transforming DNA into various organisms, including bacteria and yeast. Execute experiments to express functional native and chimeric cys-loop ion channels in yeast cells, experiments involving directed evolution including using emulsion-based selections to evolve channels toward gating by non-native ligands and to validate efficacy and specificity of novel channel/ligand pairs in neurons. Developing and running assays, including qPCR assays, fluorescence-based assays, and growth assays. Organize lab materials, order reagents, prepare lab stocks and maintain general lab safety requirements. Maintain databases of constructs. Assist PI with daily lab operations including grant writing, ordering supplies, and assisting graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Other tasks as needed to contribute to the efficient and effective functioning of a research laboratory.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, or related field. Must have research or laboratory course experience. Familiarity with engineering and or scientific equipment ordinarily used in college laboratory work. Ability to define problems, design studies to resolve problems, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret results and analyses to ensure validity of conclusions. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with chemical synthesis, waste disposal and automation. Experience in tissue or neuronal cell culture, cloning in bacterial and yeast systems, protein expression, and bioinformatics analyses. Working knowledge and in-depth understanding of molecular biology techniques. Familiarity with Python, Matlab, or equivalent.
