Additional Information

Purpose

Perform molecular biological research requiring special qualifications with latitude for independent action. Manage detailed phases of a complex research project and assist students in their research.

Essential Functions

Execute and report the detailed phases of a complex research project. Conduct molecular and biological research experiments to meet the timeline and objectives outlined in the grant research project. Experiments include cloning and expressing human genes in human cancer cell lines. Techniques include tissue culture, growth assays, sensitivity assays, FACS analysis, confocal microscopy and other general cell and molecular biology techniques. Assist PI with required grant research reports. Act as liaison with University offices, vendors and other offices as needed. Train and assist other members of the lab in various laboratory techniques including those performed for your particular project. Assist P.I. with managing lab, track and order supplies, and ensure safety compliance.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Other tasks as needed to contribute to the efficient and effective functioning of a research laboratory.

Required qualifications

Master's degree in Biology or related scientific field and two years of related experience or a Bachelor's degree and four years of experience in the field of research. Experience in radiation research and running an x-ray machine. Experience with growing, maintaining, transfecting and analyzing human cancer tissue culture cells. Experience cloning and amplifying human genes into expression vectors.

Preferred Qualifications

More than the required qualifications. Advanced coursework or PhD degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or similiar scientific field with four years of related experience. Prefer experience with DNA damage and chromatin, confocal microscopy using an Olympus Fluoview 1000, and immunofluorescence. Experience performing experiments using FACS analysis and Confocal microscopy is desired but not essential.
