Purpose

Contribute to research and development tasks in the Environmental Sciences Laboratory.

Essential Functions

Process and/or analyze acoustic data including beam noise and transmission loss. Characterize the underwater environment using archival or survey data including bathymetry, sediment type, bottom loss, and climatology. Conduct Acoustic and System Engineering to design and evaluate sonar systems. Includes modeling of acoustic propagation, directional beam noise, and sonar system performance. Implement research grade software and analysis tools in Matlab including underwater propagation models, acoustic analysis tools, array performance estimates, environmental databases, and array processing techniques. Preparation and review of analysis presentations and reports. Presentation of analysis results at internal and external working group meetings (includes travel). Support collaborative research efforts with other analysts. Supervision of junior personnel (including student employees).

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics or related discipline. Experience with one or more of the following: sonar system design and evaluation, acoustics, signal processing, modeling, and/or data processing analysis. Experience with developing software tools using Matlab. US Citizen: Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at the level appropriate to the project requirements of the position. Evidence of skills in the following areas: working with new technologies, being highly organized, planning and coordinating multiple tasks, effective time management, attention to detail, effective problem solving skills, using excellent judgment, working independently with sensitive and confidential information, maintaining a professional demeanor, working as a team member without daily supervision, effectively communicating with diverse groups of clients, working under pressure, accepting supervision and demonstrating regular/punctual attendance.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Acoustics. Current or recent eligibility for access to classified information. One year of experience with one of more of the following: analysis of acoustic, seismic or radar data, acoustic propagation modeling, geoacoustic inversion techniques, and/ or estimating sonar system performance.. One year of experience with software design, programming, and analysis using Matlab. Experience working in both Windows and Linux environments. Experience summarizing analysis results in powerpoint. Proven ability to work with minimal direction, formulate research plans, solve tough problems, and take initiative. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 of greater.
