This position requires an employee-provided home internet service and mobile/cellular voice/data plan to be used when required for work. Occasional weekend and overtime work required. This position includes periodic on-call duty on a rotating schedule. Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for any employer.

Additional Information


Provide Edge Networking support services to the University of Texas at Austin focusing on network isolation for critical university operations infrastructure such as Building Automation Systems, Building Access Control Systems, etc.

Essential Functions

Manages the university-wide operations supporting isolated networked equipment. Consult with customers and their vendors to design, implement and troubleshoot complex network security architectures and measures to protect and isolate equipment and control systems. Responsible for oversight of on-going operational work activities such as: installations, repairs, maintaining network equipment; service request and ticket triage. Exercises independent judgment and makes decisions to achieve goals. Design, build and operate networks for university unit networks. Coordinate with unit customers to evaluate network needs and design solutions to meet business requirements while adhering to campus standards. Establish and maintain close communications and good working relationships with customer representatives. May participate in technical and execution planning with UT organizational planning groups to establish scope, timeline, documentation and task breakdown for projects. Participate in Edge and Core Networking 24x7 on-call rotation and after-hours escalation process to meet organizational Service Level Agreements. Operate and maintain enterprise tools, data content, and respond to events within the university Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance and Security management. Responsible for networking monitoring tool implementation, maintenance, tuning and configuration to meet reporting needs. Responsible for enforcement and collaboration of network standards, operational policy and on-going procedures. Responsible for life-cycle management of standard operation procedures and organizational standards documentation with emphasis on the UDC ecosystem. Collaborates with Edge and Core Networking team for improvement of procedures and standards. Analyze and evaluate the capabilities of the existing network in comparison to new technologies and presents cost-benefit recommendations.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Other related functions as assigned. Drive to off-site locations to meet with customers when necessary.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Required qualifications

The successful candidate will have: Extensive experience with medium to large enterprise network operations. Experience with Cisco Systems switches, routers and firewalls (Cisco IOS). Experience with TCP/IP, routing/switching concepts, and common routing protocols. Experience administering and securing Windows and Linux operating systems. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will have: Bachelor's degree in a related field. A combination of 10 years of experience with large scale, enterprise networks (switches/routers/firewalls) including large MPLS deployments to enact security isolation. Demonstrated experience in: network security and best practices (3 yrs); control system networks (3 yrs); customer support and service (3 yrs); Cisco routing and switching; open source network management tools and network management tool development (2 yrs); software development (1 yrs); and administration of Microsoft/Apple/Linux (5+ yrs). Specific Cisco Nexus 7xxx/5xxx/95xxx/93xx; Catalyst 65/68xx, 37/38xx, 35/36xx, 29XX; ASA firewalls; MPLS. Higher education work experience.
