Provide senior manager oversight for technology operations to support the Texas Digital Library.

Essential Functions

Responsible for the technology planning and supervision of a team of system administrators and software engineers that develop and maintain the shared infrastructure of the Texas Digital Library. Motivating others, planning work for others, managing conflict, managing and measuring work, managing diversity. Working with project and service leads, provide estimates of work, assign tasks, develop and enforce processes and procedures for efficient and high-quality work, and manage project timelines for development work, upgrades, and other projects. Contribute custom code, application integration, and high-level application support as necessary. Work with development communities of the Open Source Software products deployed by TDL, including DSpace, DuraCloud, Dataverse and others. Oversee TDL Helpdesk operation, providing oversight of staff tasked with Tier 1 response and escalation of problems to other technology staff.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field. Successful experience coordinating and directing the activities of a unit, including supervising, assigning and evaluating work. Demonstrated experience in Java programming. Three or more years of professional software or application development experience. Professional experience working with web server application and database systems such as Apache, Tomcat, MySQL and PostgreSQL. Professional experience with web browser technologies such as Javascript, CSS, HTML and XHTML Experience with software versioning tools such as Git. Comfortable working in a devops-like environment in which software development, deployment, and infrastructure management roles overlap. Demonstrated excellent communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in an institution of higher education. Experience working in an academic library. More than 5 years of professional Java development experience. Professional experience integrating open source and/or commercial systems using APIs and RESTful web services. Experience with a Java web application framework, such as Spring, and Java object relational mapping. Experience with web development frameworks and languages, such as Python, Ruby/Rails, and/or PHP. Experience with Linux command line utilities and Linux shell scripting. Experience with cloud-based technology management, in particular Amazon Web Services. Experience with bug-tracking/project management tools, such as JIRA. Experience with automated testing tools. Experience with identity management systems and LDAP directories. Experience working within project management frameworks, such as Agile/Scrum.

Working conditions

May work around standard office conditions Work performed on concurrent multiple projects under pressure of rigid deadlines or time limitations. May require occasional extended work hours or on-call obligation.
